ECNC Annual report

Report of activities for 2010: ECNC's contribution to a beautiful Europe

2010 was the International Year of Biodiversity (IYB) and the year of the
10th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity.

The IYB was celebrated during a period of severe financial and economic hardship. Despite the high biodiversity ambitions in national and international policy documents for 2010, overall governments’ budgets for biodiversity and staffing declined considerably, sometimes even dramatically. This had its impact on international organizations like ECNC. Enormous efforts were required for ECNC to maintain its activities for biodiversity and sustainable development at the same level.

ECNC: the year in review

Previous Annual Reports

Report of activities for 2009: ECNC's contribution to a beautiful Europe

In 2009 ECNC was extremely active on various themes and at various geographical levels with respect to realizing targets in the field of biodiversity and sustainability. This report testifies to this. 2010 is the International Year of Biodiversity (IYB), and it is also the year towards which ECNC and many other organizations have been working since the adoption of the ‘2010 biodiversity target’ nearly a decade ago.

The IYB is being celebrated during a period of financial and economic hardship, which reflects negatively in governments’ allocations of budgets for biodiversity and staffing. However, this period is also well suited to innovate and review institutional missions.

It is becoming increasingly clear that one of ECNC’s main strengths lies in combining international and European levels and expertise with stakeholder interests and expertise at national, regional and local levels, while addressing all relevant elements of biodiversity, including the ecosystem services it delivers to society and local communities. But we offer more. . .

Annual Report 2008: 15 years of working for a Beautiful Europe

In 2008 ECNC marked the 15th anniversary of its establishment. We celebrated this memorable occasion throughout the year, not by organizing large meetings, but by putting the emphasis on the people of ECNC. It is the people of ECNC who are behind its successful 15 years of existence and ensure that ECNC is more dynamic and vigorous than ever.

The people of ECNC came together in an appealing and stimulating mission, or perhaps we should say, dream: the conservation and sustainable use of Europe’s nature, biodiversity and landscapes for the sake of both nature and people. This dream is very much alive, and the commitment of ECNC is stronger than ever.

Annual Report 2007: Working for a Beautiful Europe

ECNC was founded in 1993 as a European think tank for nature conservation by the widely respected Albert Klinkenbergh, who succeeded in translating his vision into reality by creating a truly pan-European centre. In his efforts to establish ECNC, he was supported by the Netherlands and Hungarian Governments, the Province of Noord-Brabant, the City of Tilburg, various other partners, such as IUCN and WCMC, and last but not least by Dr Antonio Machado, ECNC’s first President and initiator of the process ‘ECNC moving forward’.

And forward we moved. ECNC became a respected European Biodiversity Expertise Centre, which has initiated various innovations in nature conservation and built bridges between biodiversity interests and the wider interests of society and economy.
